All of the WWII era battleships
were named for states of the Union. Here are the flags of the states
represented by all 9 ships which were sunk by the Japanese. They are,
in no particular order; Arizona, Utah, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia,
California, Nevada, Maryland, and Pensylvannia. All except the Arizona,
Utah, and Oklahoma eventually returned to service. The USS West Virginia
was in Tokyo Bay during the Japanese surrender.
Here is another set of flags, which include the US and Hawaii flags, the
flags of the Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force (which at that time was
a branch of the Army), and Coast Guard, and the flag of the Department of
the Interior, which is in charge of the memorial.
As we were getting ready to board the back to shore, the wind picked up,
unfurling the US flag atop the ship. I took this shot through the top
of the memorial. Long may it wave.
